Social Media causes Youth suicide

Experts believe that social media use has a significant impact in teen suicide! 

According to a presentation at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association Annual Conference, digital activities among young people can have a major influence on their mental health and wellbeing.

Jamie Zelazny, PhD, RN, assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine mentioned the second biggest cause of mortality among those aged 10 to 24 years is suicide. suicide. In addition, suicide rates have tripled among young people aged 10-14 years, females and African American children under the age of 13 years have considerably higher suicide rates. Increasing suicide rates correlated with increased usage of the social media in these demographic groups.

Qualitative interviews indicated protective variables including social media support and encouragement; friendship; social involvement or encouragement to participate in social contact; and personal expression or speech.

Social Media Risks!

Heavy and problematic use of social media, interference with sleep, cyberbullying, exposure to self-harm/suicidal content, inauthenticity/being untrue to oneself, negative upward social comparison, and thwarted belonginess/unmet need to connect to others were among the social media risks identified through qualitative interviews. Qualitative interviews revealed that receiving support and encouragement from social media, feeling linked to friends, social engagement or encouragement to participate in social contact, and personal expression or the capacity to talk freely were all protective variables.
